HUMMINGBIRD REVIEWS

"Our favorite part, and a surprise to us, was the location! It's on a hillside overlooking the airport. We loved that! The Villa itself is clean, and only a short walk (less than 10 min) to town for restaurants/shopping. The owners were very helpful with suggestions of the area, and quick to respond to messages."

"My wife and I stayed here for three weeks this February. The home is very clean and beautiful inside and out. It's located on a hillside high above a beautiful Caribbean cove. The bedrooms and living room in the main house have windows overlooking the sea. The caretaker was exceptionally helpful and friendly. James, the owner, was very accommodating and readily accessible. We highly recommend this rental."

"We absolutely loved our stay at the Hummingbird Villa. The house was perfect for our family (my husband, son, me, and my parents). There were places to hang out together... gorgeous deck, poolside, nice big living room... and we all had our favorite nooks when we wanted to be alone. It was a short, beautiful walk into Winwardside for groceries or dining out. We loved the island and our home base at Hummingbird!"

"We had a wonderful time and hosted a great wedding in Villa Hummingbird. It is truly a magical place, up in the hill surrounded by ocean and islands. My favourite thing to do is having a coffee in the pool and just enjoying the view. :)"

"If you made it this far you know you are not coming to Saba to sit on a beach, stay at a mega resort, eat at a chain restaurant or shop at a big box store. If you are looking to visit a place that truly is unique and lives up to its billing as "the unspoiled queen" of the Caribbean then you are home. If you like adventure, wonderful people, and zero crime (last 3 times on island was not even given a key to the place I was staying), then you might want to give this place a look. Specifically, the Hummingbird Villa is very private, yet just an 8 minute walk to town (Windwarside). If you like nature, prepared to be serenaded by frogs, birds, roosters and perhaps a visit from some goats that roam the mountainous terrain. The house is great but perhaps the highlight is the back patio that gives you unparalleled views of the Caribbean and surrounding islands of Saint Martin, Anguilla, Saint Barthélemy, Statia, St Kitts and Nevis, a front seat to the airport runway and lastly a dark sky that gives you views of the stars that blow away what you have at home. If you are afraid of heights or have difficulty managing steep inclines you may want to pass. If you are looking for something more than the usual cookie cutter vacation you will want to consider this place. The villa will especially appeal to those who have interests in the following: engineering (views of a road that couldn't be built that was and an airport that couldn't but was), architecture (white houses with red roofs and green trim-but not mandated), astronomy (very little light pollution), aviation ( a front row seat to the takeoffs and landings at the shortest commercial runway in the world), hiking (well maintained and multiple skill level trails) and nature (the surrounding area of the property is teeming with activity). After a full day of activities on the island, I can assure you will be excited to return to the serenity of the Hummingbird Villa. Highly recommended."

"Hummingbird Villa is a most lovely home on a most lovely island. Our three generation family spent a week to remember. The house is beautiful and spacious; the views are spectacular. The pool was indispensable for the kids. And Saba is a treasure for scuba divers and snorklers and hikers. (We highly recommend the Sandy Cruz Trail.) The town of Windward is charming and only a ten minute walk from the villa. (Don't miss the bakery.) James was incredibly friendly and helpful - answering every question quickly and fully. We loved this house!"

"Everything about this experience was awesome!! James almost immediately replied once I requested the reservation. He also set us up with one of the dive operators on the island, which was a top notch shop. James also offered to help us with dinning options. Hummingbird Villa was one of the best villas on the island, spectacular view, plenty of room, and just a great place to relax after diving."

“Hummingbird Villa was Perfect for our Celebration Diving Vacation!”

[5 of 5 stars] Reviewed September 10, 2014 for a stay in September 2014

----------------------

If you are traveling to the Island of Saba in the Dutch Caribbean, we highly recommend that you stay at Hummingbird Villa. Our group of 8 adventure seekers stayed for one week and our experience could not have been better! We arrived after dark from the Dawn II ferry ride to the warm welcome and embrace of Lika, the lovely and hospitable property manager. The villa was beautifully lit and stocked with supplies to get us through the evening and following Sunday when the food stores were closed. Everything was impeccable and clean as we were given a tour of the entire property and its amenities. Soon we were nestled in with rum drinks in hand enjoying the cool Caribbean breeze on the huge patio!

We awoke to the most incredible views, sounds, and floral smells the following morning as we prepared for our first dives of the week! Sea Saba, a fantastic dive outfit, arranged our pick-up at 8:45 so we had a leisurely morning with time to familiarize ourselves with all the luxuries of Hummingbird Villa. The kitchen was well stocked and we never lacked for anything during our stay. We were celebrating a milestone birthday so we hosted a small party with food catered by The Sea Witch Restaurant (highly recommend). The rest of our group who stayed nearby and the dive staff joined in the fun and the villa with its sprawling great room and patio handled the group beautifully!

Aside from being a perfect villa, the location of Hummingbird can't be beat! There is a slight uphill walk to get into town but the good news is that after you have a nice meal and drinks or shop around, it is a short downhill walk home! Some other villas located up on Booby Hill had tremendously steep hikes home from town. At Hummingbird, we were amazed that in late August we were able to sleep with the windows open because the elevation and constant sea breeze were nice and cool. The sounds of the tree frogs, palms and surf far below lulled us to sleep!

All in all, the island is a magical "other-world" that offers some of the best diving we have ever experienced! You feel like you are in a European village on a south pacific island. Spend the money on Hummingbird Villa. You won't be disappointed. We certainly give it a solid 5 stars ++.

“Perfection”

[5 out of 5 stars]   Reviewed June 20, 2014 for a stay in June 2014

My partner and I, along with three friends headed to Saba without really knowing what to expect. We spent the week prior to our arrival island hopping around the caribbean, saving Saba for our final destination. We should have headed straight to hummingbird villa for our entire two week trip!

We arrived late on a Thursday evening as the earlier ferry’s had been cancelled. When we got to the house at 7:00 PM, we were in awe, even in the dark. The villa is beautiful. Leika was waiting for us at the door. Since we were coming in so late, she thought to get us some beer, wine, fruit, eggs, coffee, cheese.... all the things we would have wanted for our first night and breakfast the next morning. She also helped us get into a place for dinner that night. She does a amazing job making sure the guests have everything they need and want.

The next morning we got to see the house and grounds in the daylight. As said below, the pictures do not do it justice. It is stunning. One of the nicest places I have ever stayed on a vacation.

Having a pool is rare on Saba, and this house has a great one. The house is full of doors and windows to take advantage of that spectacular view. Open them up and let the air flow through, you will be instantly relaxed. The massive book collection was a wonderful surprise. Our guests read several.

The walk into Windwardside is easy enough. Just long enough to get you ready for a wonderful meal or cold beverage. The town is quaint and beautiful. Be sure to hike up Mt. Scenery!

My partner was in touch with Dan frequently during our stay with simple questions or seeking advice. Not only did Dan respond quickly, but with very entertaining responses and suggestions.

The bottom line: If you want to be surrounded beauty inside and out, experience a vacation like nothing you’ve ever had before and be more relaxed than you ever thought possible... visit Saba and stay at the nicest house on the island. Hummingbird Villa.

“Wonderful place!”

This villa is nested on the steep hills of Saba. It is about 15 minutes walk from the little town of Windward where there are restaurants and grocery stores. It has a small pool and a great deck on which breakfasts, lunches and dinners can be had, overlooking the Caribbean and the airport of Saba in the distance. The amenities are great and it is very comfortably decorated. The main house has 2 large bedrooms that each sleep 2. There is a side study/dining room where there is a pullout couch that can sleep 2. There is also a pool house that can sleep 2. We stayed with two families, 4 adults and 4 young adult children. It was not a problem at all in terms of space.
We very much enjoyed this place. It was quiet and very comfortable. Saba is not for people who are looking for nightlife and exciting disco's etc. There are no beaches. We went diving three days with an outfit called Sea Saba. Wonderful professional people who organize everything from pick up to drop off and arranging lunches, dinner reservations etc. The diving was second to none. The other days we went on hikes through the mountains and that was very beautiful too. We hope to be back here again.

My partner, myself and another couple stayed at the Hummingbird for a week Feb 22, 2013. I have been in the travel industry for almost 30yrs now and can honestly say the Hummingbird Villa has been one of the most amazing and wonderful accommodations I have ever stayed in. For me, what truly makes a place, a trip, an experience unique and priceless is undefinable. I could say it was the fantastic views, the comfortable rooms, cooling pool, fully equipped kitchen, the books and movies available to it's guests. It could be the great location to everything such as hiking trails, restaurants, grocery stores etc. It could have been the excellent attention to detail and prompt service we received from the very moment we emailed the owner to inquire about the property to the house manager and gardener that made sure we had everything and were taken care of immediately. But I think that these are only parts of the sum of a whole experience that will leave you wanting more...and constantly thinking about when you can go back. You know when you are somewhere and you get that feeling of just letting go and exhaling? Come to the Hummingbird Villa and experience Saba....there is truly no place like it anywhere else. Each of us came home with memories to last a lifetime. Thank you Dan, for creating and imbuing the Hummingbird with love and wonderful energy, may we repay you in kind one day.

Our dive trip couldn't have been nearly as nice without the deluxe accommodations at Hummingbird Villa. A beautiful property extremely well maintained, the villa had everything we could have asked for. The local caretaker Paul made sure our groceries were in ahead of our arrival, had fresh towels and linens in place, stopped by a few times during the week to be sure we had everything we needed and was very personable and friendly. We will be back for sure!

This villa is the unspoiled queen of the unspoiled queen. It combines modern conveniences and comfortable furnishings with the charm of the island. The views are incredible, the gardens are beautiful, and the owner encourages guests to pick the fruit from the many trees. There could be some inconveniences with water usage, but with some conservation measures, it just becomes part of the adventure.
The on site caretaker (Paul) was extremely helpful, never intrusive, and had some great stories of his travels around the world. Although there are several outstanding restaurants in Windwardside, no meal compared to the dinner Paul prepared for us - especially the chocolate desert (chocolate is his specialty).
When the locals hear that you are staying at Hummingbird Villa, their response is often that you are staying at the best villa on the Island. Everyone on the Island seems to want to make you comfortable. Be sure to leave some time to visit JoBean Glass Gallery, she is such a friendly, fun character.

This was our 7th trip to Saba and the first time we stayed at the Hummingbird. It was so much better than any other place we had, in fact it gave us a whole new appreciation of Saba. The view is stunning, nothing but jungle between us and the sea which was about 800 ft down from our balcony. You can hear the waves as a distant drumbeat and catch panoramic views of Sint Maarten and St. Barths in the distance. You really get a perspective of the earth's curvature. The minute we arrived we were treated like old friends, everything we needed was close to the villa, but it offers complete privacy and seclusion. The pool is something right out of Conde Naste, vanishing into the horizon of the azure Caribbean waters. We can't wait to return!

I had the fantastic experience of staying at Hummingbird Villa over a few days late Fall 2010. Mother Nature decided to fling some nasty weather during our stay but that did not dampen one of the most wonderful vacations ever. I was part a of group that stayed there and enjoyed delightful morning breakfasts on the main villa balcony, leisurely strolls into town during noon day, and evening activities that took advantage of a spacious and well maintained facility. The guest room was spotless, the landscape lush and well maintained, and my iPad worked with the wireless which was a really nice added benefit. The view is unbelievable - pictures do not do it justice at all. It's really nice to have both the peace and tranquility of Saba and the modern amenities of life right there when you need them. I would absolutely go back again - you can hang out as a group when you want and then go have some peace and quiet for yourself in one of the most gorgeous places I've ever stayed when you want too.

[5 of 5 stars] Reviewed March 31, 2011 for a stay in October 2009

I've traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean and I can guarantee you that there are very few lodgings that can better the views from Hummingbird Villa. I'm not sure exactly what the elevation is, but its high enough to watch the tiny Stsl aircraft take off and land far beneath you at the postage-stamp sized airstrip about a mile away. The villa faces east and affords an unmatched panorama: an immense basin of the Caribbenan sea stretches out before you and affords a breathtaking view of anguilla, St. Martin, St. Barts, St. Eustachias, St. Kitts and Nevis.
Because the villa is perched so high up, it is naturally cool, plus it faces the wind. Never blustery, just always delightful.
The villa is fully outfitted for a leisurely stay on Saba. From the moment you walk in the door, you feel as if you "are home" and that you are a priviledged resident of this very special island. Saba truly earns its moniker of the "Unspoiled Queen" of the Caribbean. Whether you're headed to Saba to dive its many pristine dives sites, hike its many trails, or just hang out and enjoy a slice of the Caribbean as it used to be, I can't recommend Hummingbird Villa highly enough. I can't wait to get back!!aragraph here.
